Algae are organisms which grow in damp environment and make use of light and CO₂ to create biomass. Algae can have two classifications namely macroalgae and microalgae.

Macroalgae is measured in inches and are large and multi-cellular. These can be often seen in ponds. They can grow in a number of ways. The largest variety of multicellular algae is called seaweed. That is to relate one giant kelp plant, that is more than 100 long.

Microalgae can be measured in micro meters and they are tiny and unicellular algae which normally grow in any suspension within a water body.

So, here we are going to talk about certain chemical process which takes algae and convert it into a biodiesel fuel. Many process control instrumentations can be obtained from

One real question, that many companies of the world are trying to find its answer, is how we can really produce sufficient algae to meet our demand for biodiesel?

One of the most natural methods of growing algae to produce biodiesel is by growing them in open-pond. Using open ponds, it is possible to grow algae in hot and sunny areas to get maximum production.

This may be one of the least invasive growing techniques, however it has certain drawbacks. Any bad weather and also contamination from any strains of bacteria/any other outside organisms may stunt algae growth.

Water where the algae has to grow must be kept at certain temperature, which can sometimes be difficult to maintain.

Closed loop production/vertical growth has been established by many biofuel companies for producing algae efficiently and faster, that can be more as compared to open pond growth. In case of vertical growing, algae will be placed in any clean plastic bags, so that they are exposed to sunlight from two sides.

These bags are stacked fully and protected from rain by using a shed. The extra amount of sun exposure will increase the rate of productivity of the algae, that will eventually increase oil production. Algae also needs protection from contamination.

Many other companies who are working for producing algae for biodiesel are now building closed-tank bioreactor plants for increasing oil rates further. Rather than growing algae outside, they are building indoor plants with large and round drums which grow algae under perfect conditions.

Algae can be manipulated into increasing at highest levels and can also be garnered every day. This will yield a very high algae output, which will also yield large quantity of oil for any biodiesel.

Also, closed bioreactor plants are strategically placed near energy plants for capturing excess carbon dioxide which can otherwise pollute the surrounding air.

Do-it-yourself any algae biodiesel?

Algae can also be cultivated in any closed containers and sugar can be fed for promoting growth. This method can eliminate all marginal errors as it can allow growers to have control on all environmental factors.

Benefit of this kind of process can be that it can allow the algae biodiesel production almost anywhere. However, researchers are attempting to figure out how to get sufficient sugar without creating any problem.
